Preparation Step

At FJ Tile, we pride ourselves on delivering top-notch tile installation services. Our preparation process is meticulous and follows all manufacturer protocols to ensure the highest quality and durability. Here’s how we prepare for a tile installation:

1. Initial Assessment and Repairs
Substrate Inspection: We begin by thoroughly inspecting the substrate to ensure it is clean, even, and structurally sound. Any necessary repairs are made to address cracks, holes, or uneven areas.
Moisture Control: We check for moisture issues and address them to prevent future problems.

2. Waterproofing
Schluter System Waterproofing: We use the Schluter system for waterproofing, which includes applying Schluter-KERDI waterproofing membrane on walls and floors to create a watertight seal.
Waterproof Boards: For areas like showers and wet rooms, we install waterproof boards to provide an additional layer of protection.

3. Floor Preparation
Uncoupling Membrane: For floor installations, we use the Schluter-DITRA uncoupling membrane or Strata Mat. This membrane prevents cracks in the substrate from affecting the tiles and provides waterproofing.
Hardbacker Installation: Depending on the depth and condition of the subfloor, we may use Hardbacker (cement backer board) to provide a stable and durable base for the tiles.

4. Mortar Application
Thin-Set Mortar: We use Laticrete or Schluter All-Set mortar, mixed to the appropriate consistency, to ensure strong adhesion. The mortar is applied to the substrate with a notched trowel, ensuring even coverage.

5. Membrane Installation
Embedding the Membrane: The DITRA membrane is cut to size and embedded into the mortar. We use a float or roller to ensure full contact and eliminate air pockets.

6. Sealing Seams and Transitions
Seam Sealing: For additional waterproofing, we seal the seams and floor-to-wall transitions with Schluter-KERDI-BAND and thin-set mortar.

7. Tile Installation
Tile Setting: Once the membrane is set, we apply thin-set mortar over the DITRA membrane and install the tiles, ensuring proper alignment and spacing.
Grouting: After the tiles are set, we grout the joints to complete the installation.

8. Quality Assurance
Final Inspection: We conduct a thorough inspection to ensure the installation meets our high standards and the manufacturer’s warranty requirements.

By following these detailed steps, we ensure a precise and durable tile installation that stands the test of time. Trust FJ Tile inc for your next tiling project!
